Fragments of a lifetime

Many years ago when I was starting teaching classical guitar I bought a book called “Leichte Folklorestücke für Gitarre” (Edition Ricordi) in a music store in Copenhagen with pieces for my students. Beautiful pieces! Simple and yet so idiomatic for the guitar. My students loved them as well and since then I have always bought/ordered music from this composer.
Her name is Maria Linnemann. http://www.youtube.com/user/MguitarL
Maria is a very special person. She can do so many things I cannot start to mention them here. Languages, drawings, play the piano and guitar very well. And last but not least: compose! I love all her pieces and am happy every time she publishes a new book or piece.
She has been so kind to dedicate many of her pieces to friends and family and I am honoured to be the one she dedicated her “Soledad” to.
In October 2008, while in Miami Beach, I received a mail from her that made me think a lot. I decided to compose a piece for her as a “thank you”.
I know I speak for many when I say “Thank you for all your beautiful music Maria”. We hope you will compose many more in the time coming. With this “Fragments of a Lifetime” I will express my thanks to you. I hope you will like it as much as I Iove your music.
Hugs,
Peo

Sabine plays Scarborough Fair

Scarborough Fair is a traditional English folk song of an unknown author. Simon and Garfunkel have spread in addition the probably best known version. With pleasure the song is also sung in the duet with a women’s voice and a man’s voice. It acts from a young man which was left by his girlfiend. The listener shall help him that she do a whole series of impossible things. For example, she should knitt a pullover without wool and wash it in a dry well. Then he will accept her again as his girlfriend :-)

I know, my version will be the 1.000.001st. But I like it so much that I want to share with you all :-)
I play it for Sarah (sguitar) because she introduced so many kindly guitarists here on youtube to me. Thanks for that!!!

It´s an arrangement by Per-Olov Kindgren. Please buy sheet music on his homepage:

Beethoven – Moonlight Sonata (first movement) solo piano

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: Can I get free sheet music for this piece?
A: Yes, you can download the score shown in the video from here:

http://www.musanim.com/pdf/BeethovenMoonlightSonata_mvt1.pdf

Q: Can I follow the person who made this video on Twitter?
A: Sure, Stephen Malinowski’s Twitter ID is: musanim

Q: What do the colors in the bar-graph score mean?
A: The colors indicate the “pitch class” of the notes; that is, every C# is a certain color (blue), every E is a certain color (olive green), etc. The piece is in the key of C# minor, so there’s lots of blue and green, especially at the beginning and end. The choice of colors is based on the “circle of fifths,” which you can read about here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circle_of_fifths

This method of coloring notes is described more here:

http://www.musanim.com/mam/pfifth.htm

Because this form of coloring reflects tonality, the places where the piece moves into another key are easily visible; here’s a picture of the whole piece:

http://www.musanim.com/img/FuerEliseWholePiece.gif

BTW, the colors are more distinct in the high-quality version of the video.

Q: What did this sheet music look like back in Beethoven’s time?
A: Here is a facsimile of the first edition, printed in 1802.

http://www.musanim.com/pdf/BeethovenMoonlightFirstEdition.pdf

Q: What do the light/dark areas in the bar-graph score show?
A: They show the effect of the damper pedal.

Q: What do the x’s in the score mean?
A: Those are double-sharps. A sharp goes up one semitone (F to F-sharp) and a double sharp goes up two semitones (F to F-double-sharp, same key on the piano as G).

Q: Who is playing? Who are you? How long have you been playing the piano?
A: See this:

http://www.musanim.com/faq/whoareyou.html

Q: Is there a way I could make the bar-graph scores myself?
A: The Music Animation Machine MIDI file player will generate this display; you can get the (Windows) software here:

http://www.musanim.com/player/

There are lots of places on the web where you can get MIDI files; I usually go to the Classical Archives site first:

http://www.classicalarchives.com/

Q: You said “it’s well documented that different synesthetes have different associations.” Where is this documented? I read on Wikipedia that “synesthetes, as a group, share significant preferences for the color of each letter.”
A: It’s true that there are some patterns in the associations synesthetes make between colors and letters (or numerals, pitches, etc.), but the Wikipedia article is misleading in suggesting that there’s anything approaching a unanimity of opinion. On this page, I’m collecting some references and pointers to research so that you can draw your own conclusions based on the data:

http://www.musanim.com/synesthesia/

Q: Could you please do a MAM video of _________?
A: First, check my “to do” list:
http://www.musanim.com/all/MAMToDoList.html …
If the piece isn’t listed, read the “Could you please do a MAM video of _________?” item on my main FAQ:
http://www.musanim.com/mam/mamfaq.html#copyright …
and if you think I’d consider doing it, email me (stephen at musanim dot com).

Working on the notes. I was in a hurry to leave, so it might sound like I was rushing, sorry!

Carter’s Notes

“Bella’s Lullaby,” as it appears in this film, was not written to be a lullaby but to speak of love – ecstatic, tormented love.

“And so this unnamed tune became Bellas Lullaby. It’s worth noting, though, that neither Catherine nor I ever called it that. We always referred to this tune as the “Love Theme” and I think it makes much more sense if you think of it this way. It’s more complex and emotional than any lullaby I’ve ever heard.”

“My concern, as a composer, is to make the film as a whole compelling, dramatic, emotional and cinematic. But in this case other extraneous concerns quickly started to pile on, all driven by the fans of the book. The piano scene was added because Summit realized fans wanted to hear Edward play the melody referred to as “Bella’s Lullaby,” and each of those fans has their own idea of the tune. Because I hadn’t started writing yet there was a musical vacuum into which other music started to be pulled. Rob improvised a tune for the shoot. Matthew Bellamy, of Muse, sent in his idea of “Bella’s Lullaby.” And countless readers and musicians sent in their own ideas or posted them on the internet. None of this made my job easier.”

“…I think part of the problem was that Catherine and I saw this as Bella and Edward’s “Love Theme” whereas he saw it as “Bella’s Lullaby.” And indeed, for the 30 seconds during which Edward is playing piano it is the “Lullaby.” But the theme also has to play the romance that drives the story, and I thought that was a much more important role.”

U.S. Film Release: November 21, 2008

The sheet music for “Bella’s Lullaby” will probably be released before the end of the year. When more is known, it will be listed here(Carter Burwell’s website).

Bella’ Lullaby by Carter Burwell (Official) Piano Version. I finally got down almsot all of the notes. Thank you Carter for responding to my email earlier today. It has given me the inspiration to figure out the notes for your piece.

No, I am sorry, I do not have the music sheet for the song. I played the entire song by ear and some parts with the help of Carter Burwell’s notes on his website.
