Carter’s Notes
“Bella’s Lullaby,” as it appears in this film, was not written to be a lullaby but to speak of love – ecstatic, tormented love.
“And so this unnamed tune became Bellas Lullaby. It’s worth noting, though, that neither Catherine nor I ever called it that. We always referred to this tune as the “Love Theme” and I think it makes much more sense if you think of it this way. It’s more complex and emotional than any lullaby I’ve ever heard.”
“My concern, as a composer, is to make the film as a whole compelling, dramatic, emotional and cinematic. But in this case other extraneous concerns quickly started to pile on, all driven by the fans of the book. The piano scene was added because Summit realized fans wanted to hear Edward play the melody referred to as “Bella’s Lullaby,” and each of those fans has their own idea of the tune. Because I hadn’t started writing yet there was a musical vacuum into which other music started to be pulled. Rob improvised a tune for the shoot. Matthew Bellamy, of Muse, sent in his idea of “Bella’s Lullaby.” And countless readers and musicians sent in their own ideas or posted them on the internet. None of this made my job easier.”
“…I think part of the problem was that Catherine and I saw this as Bella and Edward’s “Love Theme” whereas he saw it as “Bella’s Lullaby.” And indeed, for the 30 seconds during which Edward is playing piano it is the “Lullaby.” But the theme also has to play the romance that drives the story, and I thought that was a much more important role.”

Bella’s Lullaby on flute
ATTENTION: The video that i got the sheet music from was taken down due to a copyright claim from Hal Leonard Corporation (a sheet music company). Since the music was taken down due to a copyright claim, i will not email my copy of the music to anyone. Sorry. I got the music before it was officially released (when you couldn’t buy it yet), but now that it can be bought, just buy the music if you want to play it. It will be no more than about $5 anyway. i got the piano sheet music for “Bella’s Lullaby” (the real version) and i decided to play it on my flute. as far as i can tell i’ll be the first flute version of it, so feel free to share this video with friends. comments of any kind are appreciated. :]
edit (about 20 minutes after uploading the video): ok… so this isn’t the first flute version of this song. oh well.
edit 2 (4/25/09): people lately have been telling me to blow faster air to get the high notes out. first, all that would do would make any note that comes out extremely sharp. second, i can get those high notes. at the time i recorded this, i had been playing piccolo right beforehand and i didnt have my flute embouchure right. that’s all. if you really want a re-record of this just for me to prove this, then just ask and i’ll do it (when i find the time).

“River Flows In You” for Violin and Piano
Regarding “River Flows In You” by Yiruma…
I had a request (thanks 0violin0):) to play a song called “Bella’s Lullaby” from Twilight. This was the music that first came up when I searched for Bella’s Lullaby. I understand it’s not the official song from the soundtrack. My piano version of the ”official” Bella’s Lullaby (Carter Burwell) is here:

This is our first reading of River Flows In You.
If I played this piece again, I would change the fingering and play a harmonic high E to correct the problematic shifts. Anyway, I hope you enjoy our duo rendition.
FAQ: Where can I get the Sheet Music?
I’ve had some requests about where to find the violin sheet music. My brother and I are playing our duo version based on the piano sheet music. For the violin part, I just read the melody line from the piano sheet music and played improvised violin accompaniment whenever the piano played the melody. Here is the link for sheet music…

I am COMPLETELY aware that this is NOT the official lullaby && it’s by YIRUMA. This one is NOT in the movie(s) and is not associated with Twilight, really. I just thought that it would go good with it and considering it was the rumored lullaby at that moment, I figured I’d make a video. BUT THE ACTUAL ARTIST IS YIRUMA.
(Speaking of which, this video was not meant to be “good” or anything. It’s a picture of the cover. That’s it. This ‘video’ is meant strictly to listen to the song.)

“When I read the manuscript midnight sun, the section where edward talks about writing the song, this is the song that I heard in my head but could not place. It follows almost exactly to the t how edward describes it. How it starts off sad because hes in love with her and can’t have her and then how it picks up because he is happy anyways and she makes him feel again. Then how the song sort of dwindles into a sad ending because he knows that she can’t stay and be with him because of what he is and that she is a mortal. Its perfect, even though I do like the lullaby that was in the movie.”

Here’s my attempt at playing Bella’s Lullaby, the official version by Carter Burwell (as in the movie Twilight). I’m playing this by ear. I tried to make it sound as close to the original as possible. I am NOT a Twilight fan, but I do think this piece sounds pretty on the piano.

ABOUT THE BIG CHORDS:
I can only reach 9ths, not 10ths, so I can’t play the chords exactly like they are in my sheet music, I just try to make it sound *close* to what it should be like. If you can reach the 10ths, excellent, play it like it is written. But I know some of you have also had this problem where you can’t reach the chords. What you can do is play the first chord (the 9th, which most people should be able to reach) and hold down the bass note of that with the pedal. Then when you play the 10th, keep the bass note held from the chord before that, and DON’T re-play that bass note, just play the upper two notes, which should only be a span of a 6th. If you can’t reach the 9th, then you can leave off the bottom note.

I put this down on paper based on what I heard (listening over and over, measure by measure), before any actual official music sheets came out (see date video was created). I spent my time doing this because I wanted to play it on my piano, and there was no other place to get the sheet music at that time, so I had to do it myself.

If you are having trouble with the left hand high “E” note in the 3rd and 7th measures === It takes practice, but you can play the high e of the left hand with your right hand thumb then continue into the right hand notes you are supposed to be playing for the rest of the measure (it’s playing “e” holding it down then adding g then while still holding the e note, release the g, and play the a.)
The octave higher parts don’t play higher when you listen, since the program I used to make it didn’t include 8va. Also, in Finale Note Pad I used a querty keyboard to input the notes, and therefore the second b in the first measure is played as a natural, as it should be, but the music SHOULD have a natural sign on it, and should not be played by you as a b flat. (Finale input via querty keyboard does not extend the accidental through the measure for same pitch notes at different octaves as music notation normally does). If you are confused by this, just play measure 1 right hand with first B as a flat, second B as a natural, and also any other measures that look just like it. Hope this helps those of you looking for sheet music to this song and I don’t know why it isn’t coming up crystal clear, my video I uploaded is clear—so sorry about that.
