If there was a grove half way between steps, That would be a half or semi tone.  It is the tone halfway between two whole tones.  This is how western music is made to distinguish how far one note is from another.  On the piano, from one key to another, including black keys, are half tones.  So when two white keys are side by side with a black key between they are a whole step.  Without the black key they are a half tone  apart.</description>
